Superintendent's Student Advisory Council

Inaugural SSAC meeting gives students a voice
Posted on 05/20/2016

Students from across the Victor Valley Union High School District had an opportunity to share their opinions on everything from course offerings to water fountains this week at the inaugural Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council.

Associated Student Body representatives and their respective ASB advisers from seven campuses attended the event May 9 at the district office. VVUHSD Superintendent Dr. Ron Williams was on hand to hear the concerns of students.

“I hear from staff members and other stakeholders often,” Dr. Williams said. “But it’s less often that I get to hear directly from students. I was thoroughly impressed with these young men and women, and their input will help inform our decisions moving forward.”

Students from Adelanto High, Cobalt Institute of Math and Science, Goodwill Education Center, Lakeview Leadership Academy, Silverado High, University Prep and Victor Valley High covered a variety of topics including school safety and security, climate and culture, facilities, cleanliness, elective courses and food. (A Hook Junior High representative was chosen but was unable to attend.)

Public Engagement Information Manager Kris Reilly facilitated the event with the assistance of Office Assistant Dianah Edington, who took detailed notes on the students’ concerns. The information will be revisited in the next SSAC meeting, which is being scheduled for September.
