University Preparatory School senior Brianna Hernandez is an academic standout at a school known for its rigorous standards, but what makes her even more remarkable is her dedication to helping others.

Hernandez, the school’s ASB president, has been named the Victor Valley Union High School District Student of the Month for her academic performance (with a 4.5 GPA last year) as well as her community-minded endeavors.

Jolie Calderon, an administrative assistant at UP, said Hernandez spends a lot of time volunteering on campus, including organizing blood drives.

“She’s a model student,” Calderon said. “She’s always helping everybody. If she has to be here at 5:30 a.m., she will be.”

In addition to her ASB duties, Hernandez is a member of the charitable club Seek to Inspire as well as the Environmental Club. She has attended UP, a grade 7-12 school of choice in the Victor Valley Union High School district, since the seventh grade. She hopes to attend UC Berkeley and study environmental science.

“I love the atmosphere (at UP),” Hernandez said. “Everybody knows each other and we all get along.”
