Cobalt Institute of Math and Science senior Allen Navarro died on Sept. 19, 2016 after a long battle with cancer. He was 17. A funeral was held for Navarro on Sept. 30 and was attended by hundreds of mourners, including students and staff of the Victor Valley Union High School District.

Allen was placed in the pediatric intensive care unit at Loma Linda University Medical Center earlier this school year. He was awarded his honorary diploma in the hospital by Principal Melda Gaskins, and he was able to dress up for his senior photo over the summer.

Allen had attended CIMS, a grade 7-12 school of choice, since the seventh grade. He was diagnosed with brain cancer in his 10th-grade year, school staff said.

The Navarro family told Victor Valley Union High School District Health Technician Tanya Martin that Allen passed away Monday night at around 6 p.m.

“Our hearts are with the Navarro family,” VVUHSD Superintendent Dr. Ron Williams said. “We will offer any support we can during this unimaginably difficult time.”

District staff presented the Navarro family with approximately $1,785 in donations that were collected from VVUHSD employees and the community, including roughly $200 that CIMS students collected at their Back to School Night. In addition, more than $4,000 was raised by a GoFundMe page created by district staff.
