Three Victor Valley Union High School District high schools were named among the best in California in the U.S. News & World Report rankings released this week, with University Preparatory School again earning the top marks in the Inland Empire.

University Prep earned its fourth consecutive “gold” ranking from U.S. News and is the only school in the region to earn that distinction. Victor Valley High School and Cobalt Institute of Math and Science each earned “bronze” recognition.

“We are delighted to see not only University Prep get this well-deserved accolade, but to see two more of our schools receive this prestigious honor this year,” Victor Valley Union High School District Superintendent Dr. Ron Williams said. “It speaks volumes about the hard work and dedication of our district community, including our staff, parents — and most of all, students!”

The magazine ranks University Prep No. 70 among California High Schools and No. 403 nationally. The grade 7-12 public school of choice in Victorville is again the highest ranked school in San Bernardino or Riverside counties. No other school in either county was awarded gold status by the magazine, which ranks schools on a number of factors including college readiness and graduation rate.

With a population of roughly 1,100 students, UP boasts a graduation rate of 99.4 percent, placing it third in the county behind only two specialized charter schools with enrollments of less than 100. UP recently celebrated its second National Blue Ribbon Award, an unprecedented feat for a High Desert school.

“It’s so amazing that a little school in Victorville is recognized as a national leader,” said UP Principal Valerie Hatcher, who has been at the school since its inception 12 years ago and has been the principal for 11 years. Crediting the hard work of students, parents and staff, she said the school has “come a long way. But we’re still not number one. The goal is to be number one and that hasn’t changed.”

Victor Valley High School, the first high school in the Victor Valley, celebrated its 100th year of existence last school year. VVHS is ranked 567th in the state (a bronze ranking) by U.S. News and was deemed “nationally recognized.”

Cobalt Institute of Math and Science, a STEM-focused, grade 7-12 school of choice in Victorville, celebrated its first graduating class last year. CIMS made the list for the first time this year with a bronze status and national recognition.

VVUHSD, which serves nearly 10,000 students at eight middle and high schools, had more ranked schools than any other local district this year.
