Goodwill Education Center student Alexis Lagunas has been selected as the Victor Valley Union High School District Student of the Month for April.

Thanks to her leadership and good citizenship in addition to her academic accomplishments, Lagunas has become the first Goodwill student named VVUHSD district-wide Student of the Month.

Lagunas, 18, came to Goodwill for credit recovery. Lagunas says she was a “bad” student before coming to the alternative high school, but in her two years at Goodwill she has turned her life around.

“I fell in love with the school,” Lagunas said. “Things have changed a lot.”

Lagunas is graduating this month — ahead of schedule — after becoming a model student at Goodwill. She has served as a PBIS Ambassador, a peer helper, and one of the School Site Council student representatives.

She was also part of a Goodwill team at the Curiosity Quest Problem Solvers competition, helping GEC take second in the regional competition (tied with University Prep). Lagunas and her team developed a concept to save water by converting the steam in a shower back into liquid water.

After graduating, Lagunas is enlisting in the U.S. Navy.

“She has a great rapport with fellow students and staff,” Goodwill Dean of Students Dr. Benisha Carr said. “She finds the positive in any situation and always offers help when needed. She has grit, tenacity, and problem-solving skills. She has shown that she is committed, dedicated, and a hard worker. These qualities are the definition of a student leader.”
