Goodwill Education Center and Silverado High School were among 42 schools in the High Desert and Mountain regions honored with California PBIS Coalition awards at a ceremony Aug. 24 at Silverado High School.

There were three levels of awards given to schools based on their success in implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports to improve the culture on campus for students and staff. Goodwill received a silver award and Silverado received bronze.

A Goodwill student, Britini McDermott, was among the speakers at the event. Now a senior, McDermott talked about overcoming her initial reluctance to being chosen as a campus PBIS leader in her junior year; she eventually grew to enjoy her role in helping to quash bullying on campus.

She also told the story of how she won a Chromebook in a PBIS raffle and decided to give it away to a graduating classmate who needed it for college.

Staff members from both schools were on hand to accept the awards and were cheered on by district administrators, including Superintendent Dr. Ron Williams.

“PBIS is an excellent tool for improving school climate and culture, and we’re very proud of Goodwill and Silverado for implementing it so effectively,” Williams said.

The presentation also featured a recording of a PBIS rap song created by Goodwill students. Jordan Allen and Aaron Alamalo rhymed about working hard at academics and treating others with respect. A musical performance by Silverado High School Advanced Guitar students opened the ceremony.

The event was hosted by the California Association of Health and Education Linked Professions (CAHELP) with assistance from Desert/Mountain SELPA and the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools. County Superintendent Ted Alejandre and CAHELP CEO Jenae Holtz congratulated each school for their statewide recognition
