APPLE VALLEY Four Victor Valley Union High School District schools were among 79 in the region honored for their implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports in a ceremony this week at Granite Hills High School.

PBIS is a program that aims to foster a positive school culture by forming positive relationships between students and staff.

As Silverado High accepted its first gold PBIS gold award at the 4th annual event presented by the California Association of Health and Education Linked Professions and the California PBIS Coalition, two members of the Hawks’ PBIS team spoke to the crowd at Tuesday’s event. Teachers Amanda Buchanan and Angelo Mayo said recognizing positive behavior was one key to making PBIS successful.

“One of our biggest challenges was recognition,” Mayo said. “A key for us was including those students who really thrive with recognition.”

Fellow VVUHSD school Goodwill High was also honored with gold, while Adelanto High School and Victor Valley high school earned silver.
