VVUHSD has 12 county Science Fair medalists

ONTARIO — The Victor Valley Union High School District earned four gold medals, the most of any local district, at the Inland Science and Engineering Fair.

A total of 37 students from the the three-county region (San Bernardino, Inyo and Mono) won gold medals in the Elementary, Junior and Senior divisions at the 37th annual awards ceremony on April 4. Gold medalists from the Junior and Senior divisions advance to the California State Science Fair, held April 29-30 in Los Angeles.

Alexander Diaz-Cruz and Mylah Punla of University Prep each won a gold medal for their project “Sensored White Cane,” while their UP classmate Leila Kessler won gold for “Dog-Aid: Birth of a Revolution.” Kayenne Scaletta of Cobalt Institute of Math and Science won a gold medal for “Work Energy, Physics in a Roller Coaster.”

VVUHSD also claimed three silver medals (Janet Osuji and Nalanie Flores, Silverado; Ernesto Del Rio, Cobalt Institute of Math and Science) and five bronze (Bethany Morrison and Nirvana Alba, University Prep; Wilson Ramirez, Silverado; Ayleen Acosta and Rachel Searay, Victor Valley).

Nine other High Desert students won gold medals: Landon Collins, Melva Davis Academy of Excellence; Jennalynn Negrete, Rancho Verde Elementary; Gabriel Reder, Apple Valley High; Varun Salwan, Sitting Bull Academy; Noah Cain, Ranchero Middle; Isaiah Weaver, Carmel Elementary; Madison DiGiorgio, Brady Elliott and Kyndell Hendrix, The Heritage School.

Individual and group projects were judged in 23 categories of science in wide range of fields such as microbiology, zoology, math and physics, electronics, consumer sciences and earth sciences.
